Napping
Strategies for Effective Use of Napping
Napping has been shown to increase alertness and performance. The research has been summarized in a recent document on napping.
- Short, opportunity naps are 45 minutes or less and should be taken in accordance with company policies when on duty.
- Longer, restorative naps are usually 2 hours in length.
Naps can increase alertness, but, be sure to allow for "wake-up" time of at least 15-20 minutes after a nap.
Some people report grogginess and sluggishness immediately following a nap, whereas others feel refreshed and alert.
It depends on the individual.
